Best travel insurance for Bali — four plans, scooter rules checked

SafetyWing, World Nomads, Heymondo and Genki compared on scooter conditions, medical and evacuation limits, and what each publishes on price.

The short version

Don't pick on the brand name. Pick on the scooter clause.

Three things decide whether a Bali claim pays: the scooter clause, the medical and evacuation limits, and what happens when a flight does not leave. The plans' own wording differs on all three. SafetyWing wants an add-on for anything above 50cc. Genki covers light motorcycles even without a licence (its definition is in the table). Heymondo does not spell out its scooter terms on its Indonesia page.

This guide compares four plans that sell to visitors, using each insurer's own policy and help pages (checked Oct 2026). Where a provider does not publish a number, the table says so instead of guessing. Prices are indicative and move, so treat them as a starting point and get the live quote for your dates.

Our pick, in one line
Riding a scooter and staying a month or more? Start with Genki or SafetyWing: both put their scooter conditions in plain words. A one or two week holiday? Get a Heymondo or World Nomads quote, and ask them in writing about scooters before you pay.

Five things a Bali trip has to cover

The comparison

Four plans, side by side as published, Oct 2026

Prices are indicative and were checked in Oct 2026 on each provider's own pages. "Quote-based" means the provider does not publish a price for a two-week trip. The table scrolls sideways on a phone.

SafetyWing Nomad EssentialTrips of a month or more. Priced in 4-week blocks, and you can sign up after you have already left home.Motor accidents are covered only if you are properly licensed, wearing all safety equipment and not intoxicated. A moped or motorcycle over 50cc also needs the Adventure Sports add-on, bought at sign-up and not addable later.US$250,000 overall. Evacuation US$100,000 lifetime.US$62.72 per 4 weeks, ages 18-39. World NomadsHolidaymakers. Its conditions depend on your country of residence, so if you live in Bali, check eligibility with them first. You need the valid home licence for that vehicle class, must follow local road rules and must wear a helmet, which it calls a condition of cover. A passenger needs a licensed rider and a helmet. No engine-size rule is stated on that page. Not published on its Indonesia page. Limits vary by plan (Standard or Explorer), and cover depends on your country of residence.Quote-based. No price published.Scooter rules, residence, Indonesia
HeymondoShort holidays. The age limit is 69 for trips up to 29 days and 49 for trips of 30 days or more. Not stated on its Indonesia page, which only says to be cautious on a moped or scooter and always wear a helmet. Ask for the exact wording before you ride.US$10,000,000 on Heymondo Medical and Premium. US$5,000,000 on Top.From US$2.49 a day (Medical), US$2.72 (Top), US$3.02 (Premium). Genki TravelerStays of a month or more, up to one year. The wording lets you cancel no earlier than one month after the start date. The driver must wear a helmet (a passenger is covered without one). You are covered without a valid licence on light motorcycles (top speed up to 110 km/h and, with a combustion engine, 125cc or less, or, if electric, 11 kW or less). For other vehicles you need the licence if the law requires one. No racing or unsupervised off-road. Damage to the bike is never covered.EUR 1,000,000 overall, with a EUR 50 deductible per case (not applied to inpatient stays). Not published on its public pages. Quote-based.Wording (PDF), help, guide
Covered by the policy is not the same as legal on the road
Genki's wording tolerates a missing licence on a light motorcycle. That is a policy term, not permission to ride. The UK government says to confirm you hold the correct licence before you ride or hire a vehicle, and our scooter guide covers what Indonesia expects. Sort the licence first.
The fine print

Four things the comparison table can't show

  • Waiting periods when you buy abroad. Genki's wording only covers medical emergencies in the first 14 days unless you were in your home country or a country where you had health cover the day before the start date. World Nomads says purchases made while already overseas are subject to waiting periods. Buy before you fly.
  • Pre-existing conditions. Genki excludes conditions with symptoms, advice or treatment in the year before the start date. SafetyWing's Essential plan does not cover pre-existing conditions. Heymondo does not cover pre-existing conditions either. Genki's wording lets the insurer cancel cover, even retroactively, if your application answers are not complete and truthful, so declare everything.
  • Direct payment vs paying first. Genki says it pays hospitals directly for inpatient stays and reimburses outpatient costs. Heymondo says that most of the time its 24/7 assistance platform takes care of medical bills for you. Read the claims section for the plan you buy.
  • Delay and cancellation cover. SafetyWing Essential pays US$60 for a delay of 3 to 8 hours and US$150 for 8 hours or more, and its trip interruption cover is a US$5,000 ticket home after a family death. It is not cancellation cover. Heymondo lists cancellation and interruption up to US$7,000 on Medical and Premium and US$3,500 on Top. World Nomads covers cancellation and interruption for reasons such as family emergencies or a doctor-advised halt. None of these pages says whether an ash cloud qualifies, so ask the insurer before you rely on it.
How to choose

Match the plan to the trip

  • You will ride a scooter. Read the scooter row first. Check the engine size of the bike you plan to rent against the clause. SafetyWing treats anything above 50cc as add-on territory, so if you pick it and might ride, buy the Adventure Sports add-on at sign-up.
  • One or two weeks, no riding. Heymondo publishes per-day starting prices, while SafetyWing's page prices in 4-week blocks. For a short holiday, get live quotes for your exact dates from Heymondo and World Nomads, then compare the medical and evacuation limits and the activity list.
  • A month or more, flexible dates. SafetyWing and Genki are aimed at longer stays. Genki's wording sets a one-month minimum, and SafetyWing is billed every 4 weeks.
  • Diving, climbing or quad tours. Check the activity list line by line. Genki publishes its diving and trekking limits, Heymondo needs an add-on for diving, and SafetyWing treats ATVs and quad biking differently (see above), so check whether your tour counts as an ATV.
  • You live in Bali. These are visitor plans. Start with our nomad insurance guide or the full Bali expat guide.

FAQ

Common questions

Does travel insurance cover scooter accidents in Bali?
Sometimes. SafetyWing, World Nomads and Genki all cover riding under conditions (licence, helmet, sobriety, and for SafetyWing an add-on above 50cc). Heymondo does not state its scooter terms on its Indonesia page. Read the conditions, because that is where the plans differ.
Can I buy travel insurance after I have arrived in Bali?
SafetyWing says you can sign up before you depart or at any point during your travels. Genki says you can sign up from anywhere, even if you are already travelling. Expect waiting periods when you buy abroad, so buy before you fly if you can.
Will my plan cover a volcano eruption that cancels my flight?
It depends on the delay and cancellation wording, which none of the pages we checked spell out for volcanic ash. The UK government warns that ash clouds can disrupt flights and says to check with your airline or travel company. Our advice: ask the insurer in writing.
How much medical cover do I need for Bali?
There is no official number. The UK government says evacuation can cost tens of thousands of pounds, so a plan with a low evacuation cap is the weak spot. Compare the evacuation limit and the medical limit separately.
Is World Nomads available if I live in Indonesia?
World Nomads’ conditions depend on your country of residence: the country where you are a citizen or legal resident, with an unrestricted right of entry and a residential address. If you live in Bali, check eligibility with them before you rely on it.
Is a travel plan enough if I live in Bali long term?
Genki Traveler describes itself as coverage abroad, not a replacement for health care in your home country, and runs for a maximum of one year. For a year or more in Bali, look at expat health cover instead, plus BPJS if you work here.
